Rural Ability Programme about to Roll
After we received an unprecedented number of applications for the position, we are extremely pleased to have just appointed Shannon Morgan to the role of Programme Coordinator for the Rural Ability programme. Shannon is a very highly respected old Zithulelean, who worked at Zithulele Hospital for 5 years as an OT and then as the Chief OT. After a short time away working with children affected by Cerebral Palsy, she is now returning to head up the Rural Ability programme.
The programme is a joint partnership between Jabulani and the international NGO, the Christian Blind Mission (CBM). The aim of the programme is to provide a community based disability service which will help to those with disabilities to be part of 'mainstream' society - i.e. to remove the barriers which currently marginalise disabled people and give them access to the services and opportunities which non-disabled people enjoy. This will involve advocacy and education in the community to change the public perception of disabled people, as well as identifying and setting up solutions to current issues such as access to transport, education and healthcare for disabled community members.
